Golf Travel - A Memorable Week in Mesquite

Mesquite Golf Collage - Golf Girl Media

After an awesome week of golf in the sublime paysage of the Virgin River Valley, I have quite a bit to write about.

For the moment I'm catching up with a mountain of email and re-acclimating myself to the the lush, leafy Connecticut landscape. However, during coming week I'll be posting numerous stories on my amazing adventure:  the spectacular desert courses, the delightful resorts and restaurants, and the unique Mesquite golf culture, a culture that has inspired a highly competitive amateur golf championship... that's also friendly and inclusive: The Mesquite Amateur.

I look forward to telling you all about it.

Tell me your book flavor!

Are you going to ALA in June? Me too!

I have some spare time after my schedule book signing on Saturday, June 25 (10-11am!) and it would be fun to interview some more authors for my Book Flavor interviews! Let me know if YOU want to be the subject of one of them at gracelin.manager@gmail.com and we can start arranging!

REMEMBER by Christina Rossetti: A Poem in Memory of a Dear Friend

Dr. Stephen D. Hayes

Last Saturday, I lost one of my oldest and dearest friends--Dr. Stephen D. Hayes. Both my husband Mike and I had been close to Steve and his wife Clare for nearly fifty years. Steve was a brilliant man of great accomplishment. A child and adult psychologist, psychoanalyst, and addiction specialist, he held three doctorates and two board certifications. He was the co-founder of the Lynn Community Health Center in Lynn, Massachusetts. He helped build a thriving Behavioral Health and Integrated Care Service department at LCHC. The LCHC now serves more than 33,000 people—including 45% of the children who live in the city. Steve was dedicated to serving the people who came to the health center for four decades. He helped thousands of people during his lifetime.

Steve had a real passion for life. He and Clare took great joy in entertaining their close friends. Steve had the most wonderful sense of humor and a great hearty laugh. Mike and I loved being in his company. We spent many of the most memorable days of our lives with Steve and Clare--celebrating Fourth of July holidays on their boat moored in Marblehead Harbor...ringing in the New Year with them at Mittersill in the White Mountains of New Hampshire...spending Memorial Day weekends with them on Cape Cod when our children were young...having gourmet cookoffs with them and other friends at their home in Salem.

L to R: Mike, Steve, Clare, Me

I will miss my Steve. My long friendship with him enriched my life. His loss has left an empty place in my heart. Still, I have vivid and happy memories of all the wonderful times that we spent together.

I selected the following poem to post today in memory of Steve:

REMEMBER

by Christina Rossetti

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more, day by day,
You tell me of our future that you plann'd:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.

Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.

#5 on NY Times Bestseller List!!

EEKS!! Where the Mountain Meets the Moon is #5 on this week's NY Times Bestseller List! WOW!!

This is a huge shock!! The book has just dropped off the Indie Bestseller List (but it had been on there for a while, thanks so much, Indie Bookstores!) so I thought the run was over. So I was very, very surprised (and happy!) it actually hit the NY Times list!

I feel this is due to all the readers who cared about this book and are sharing it with others. I've mentioned this before and it is still true--as an author, there is nothing sadder than when you create something with all your soul and passion and realize that no one (or very few people care). So when the opposite happens, it is extremely wonderful. So I truly thank you so much from the bottom of my heart.

Author's syndrome, a cure?

Does anyone else ever experience this? You're writing something you're supposed to be writing -- something hard. Maybe something you're under contract for, maybe something you've promised yourself you will write. And it's really hard.

Suddenly, a new idea pops into your mind -- not an idea for the book you're supposed to be writing about, but another book. A MUCH BETTER book. You tell yourself to get back to work on the novel you're supposed to be writing, but the new book would be SO MUCH better! Many reasons for this come into your mind, too, both to do with how bad the book you're supposed to be writing is and how GREAT the new one will be.

Usually, when this happens, I waste a lot of time resisting temptation, getting distracted by the new idea, thinking about it when I should be working, talking to my friends about it blah blah blah.

A few weeks ago, I discovered a cure.

I almost feel like saying -- "Try to guess what the cure is"
and then hiding the answer with blank lines, because the cure is so simple.....

But that would be childish. This is the cure:

Actually start to WRITE the new novel.

Guess what?

It's JUST AS HARD AS THE OLD NOVEL!

I think part of the fantasy (the unconscious part, perhaps?) of the new idea is that this other book is going to be so much easier, because it's such a great idea that it will practically write itself as you get swept along by inspiration blah blah blah.......

Ha!
