The Liberty Cup - Cristie Kerr's Two-Day Charity Golf Event

Windows were rattled, branches were broken and a number of streets were flooded but Metro NY managed to avoid the worst of hurricane Irene.

Most New York City subways, buses and commuter trains will be back to normal tomorrow morning after a complete shut-down in anticipation of what could have been a far more destructive weather event. 

Better yet, the next several days are expected to be dry and sunny.  That's welcome news, especially if you've got a major charity golf event planned... and that's the position Cristie Kerr finds herself in.  This week the LPGA mega-star will host the two-day Inaugural Liberty Cup Charity Golf Tournament. 

The event kicks off tomorrow evening with a welcome reception at PH-D, an otherworldly space on the rooftop of the new Dream Hotel.  On Tuesday professional golfers and stars from the sports & entertainment worlds will head out to Jersey City and breathtaking Liberty National Golf Club for the Liberty Cup Pro-Am. The day finishes with a Cocktail Reception, Dinner, an Auction & Awards and will benefit Kerr’s Birdies for Breast Cancer Foundation and the Christie Kerr Women’s Health Center at the Jersey City Medical Center, as well as other Jersey City Charities.

Cristie Kerr Donates & Defends at State Farm Classic

Cristie Kerr climbed the leader board at Panther Creek Country Club today with a 67 that put her into a tie for ninth as she enters the weekend looking to defend her title at the LPGA State Farm Classic ...and to secure a win after two runner-up finishes.

In addition to her work on the golf course, the 14 time LPGA Tour winner has been quite busy off the course raising money for her Birdies for Breast Cancer charity.  Several days ago she presented a $5,000 check to the Simmons Cancer Institute at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.



The donation was made at a wine-tasting event held at Panther Creek in conjunction with “Curvature” Cristie Kerr’s signature wine label.  It will fund ongoing research to fight breast cancer.

As a charitable partner, SCI will also receive funds from the LPGA... and tomorrow is "Get Your Pink On Day" when spectators who wear pink will get free parking and four breast cancer survivors representing the cancer institute will be walking with the pros. It looks like a rosy weekend ahead in Springfield.

Cristie Kerr Honored at "Celebrity Fight Night"

It was quite a weekend for Cristie Kerr.

Her fourth place finish today at the inaugural RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup means that her designated charities will share in the $1 million all-charity purse.  Not surprisingly, Birdies for Breast Cancer the charity she founded five years ago and has worked for tirelessly, will get one half of her $40 thousand winnings.  The other half will go to The Muhammed Ali Parkinson's Charity.

On Saturday evening Cristie received the prestigious Muhammad Ali Award for Sports Achievement at a glittery gala, hosted by the legendary three-time World Heavyweight Champion. The evening honors leaders in sports, entertainment and business who, like the iconic boxer, exemplify a winning spirit and singular generosity.

 Celebrity Fight Night has been held annually for almost two decades and has raised over 65 million dollars for Parkinson’s research. It's universally recognized as one of the country's top charity events and, year after year, it attracts the world's brightest stars for an incredible live auction and extraordinary performances by top entertainers.

Cristie looked stunning in a in firey red one-shoulder evening gown and sat with fellow honoree Halle Berry who, it turns out, is quite obsessed with... golf. In fact Ms. Berry hosts her own charity golf classic. ~ I'm guessing the actress may have asked for a couple of tournament tips from the golf star.

The LPGA now moves on to Los Angeles for the Kia Classic.

Golf Giving - October is Over but Golf Gives On

OK, what happened to October?

I just looked at the calendar noticed it was gone. Over. Finito. And it took four November days with it.

I guess I'm getting old because I'm thinking: it seems like the days just flew off the calender ...and I'm sure I remember my grandmother saying stuff just like that. ~ Actually, you certainly remember may remember I celebrated my 23rd birthday back on the 14th. Belated thanks for all the warm well-wishes. That was an early highlight.

Then there were multiple visits to NYC, for previews of some amazing golf fashion lines, and afternoons spent at Winged Foot, Quaker Ridge and The Norfolk Country Club getting acquainted with the aesthetics and idiosyncrasies of A.W.Tillinghast.  Yes, October was a blur, but a pretty wonderful one.

Also, October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and that too flew by, but fortunately, the mission behind it goes on all year and to that end here at GGM... and throughout the golf world... efforts will continue to raise funds and awareness for this cause. Some of the things we'll be involved with throughout the coming twelve months are:

Once again it’s time for my Thursday post! But I don’t suppose I really need to tell you that as I assume it’s already on your Calenders... right? And, speaking of Calenders, October is a special month for Golf Girl Media. Not only is it my birthday month (a national holiday is in the works), but more importantly, it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

As you may know we’re huge fans of Cristie Kerr and her Birdies For Breast Cancer Charity. A Busy Fall Week for LPGA Star Cristie Kerr

As green leaves turn gold and days grow shorter, summer is a fast-fading memory in and around New York City.

However despite the tinge of regret that inevitably marks the season's end, a New York fall is always something to look forward to, as it inevitably brings with it a delightful, multi-hued foliage display and a new series of cultural events, festivals and museum shows. ~ September can be a busy month in NY and it certainly has been for LPGA Champion and part-time Gotham resident Cristie Kerr.

This past Wednesday there was the official ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Cristie Kerr Women’s Health Center at Jersey City Medical Center. The facility is state-of-the-art, and houses digital mammography machines and a unique breast MRI. Cristie helps fund the center through her Birdies For Breast Cancer charity, allowing both insured and uninsured patients to be able to receive services.

Later that afternoon Cristie joined LPGA Commissioner Mike Whan and a number of other LPGA players for a sponsor's summit.

The gathering took place at Manhattan's Hard Rock Cafe and was set up to present the business of the LPGA and the core values of the organization, encouraging prospective sponsors to get involved and take advantage of the sponsorship opportunities with the LPGA.

Then just yesterday was the annual Cristie Kerr Birdies for Breast Cancer Celebrity Golf Classic an event that raises funds the new Women's Health Center. It took place in the shadow of the statue of Liberty, at the dynamic Liberty National Golf Course.

LPGA players Natalie Gulbis, Morgan Pressel, Amanda Blumenherst, Jimin Kang, Michelle McGann, Kelli Kuehne and Hee Young Park participated as dis Boston Celtics star Ray Allen, former NY Mets catcher Mike Piazza, sportscaster Dan Hicks, Gossip Girl star Matthew Settle and PGA Tour winner Curtis Strange. There was the golf tournament and a competitive poker match. At the cocktail party... Cristie presented Curvature, her own wine label.

There's no LPGA tournament this weekend... the next one being is the Navistar Classic, that'll take place in Prattsvile AL... following that is the CVS/pharmacy LPGA Challenge in Danville, CA. Then Cristie's off to Malaysia for the Sime Darby.

From the looks of things Cristie won't be slowing down as the seasons change.
